What is Medical Microneedling/Skin Needling?

Medical Microneedlin/ Dermarolling or Skin Needling involves puncturing the dermis with a Dermaroller which is a needle-like device to induce new collagen growth for the purpose of skin rejuvenation. It works by stimulating collagen growth so can take up to 4 months for results to become apparent.

•Post Acne Scarring (Pitting)
•Atrophic Scarring (Chickenpox / Traumatic)
•Raised Fibrous Scars
•Specific Lines and Wrinkles
•Full-face Skin Rejuvenation
•Enlarged Pores
•Stretch Marks.
•Red Veins/Rosacea.

Categories of Medical Microneedling/Skin Needling/ Dermarolling

There are 3 categories of Medical Microneedling

1. Medical – This is performed by a doctor or surgeon. A doctor or surgeon will generally use medical grade needles which range in depth from 1.5mm to 3mm. This requires the use of an anaesthetic and possible sedation. It is generally performed as a sterile procedure in the surgery. It takes about 5 days to recover but a patient should be able to go to work within a day or two. Dermarolling is a good adjunct to other dermal therapies like chemical peels or laser and it enhances penetration of cosmeceuticals. At Adare Cosmetics Clinic we do a glycolic peel at the same time as the dermarolling for enhanced results. Dermarolling is a treatment option for darker skin types also due to minimal risk of post-inflammatory hyper or hypo-pigmentation.
2. Non-Medical or Beauty– performed by the dermal therapist or beautician. Shorter needles less than 1.0mm are usually used. A topical anaesthetic cream is usually sufficient as analgesia. This is performed as a clean procedure and generally a 2 day recovery would be expected.
3. Home – This is performed by the patient at home. Shorter needles are used again, usually less than 0.5 mm. No anaesthetic is needed and there is no downtime. A patient “rolls” their skin once per day and should not let anyone else touch the roller.

Patient Expectations

Medical Microneedling produces collagen which gives long term results, however collagen can take up to 4 months to form. It is used on the face, décolletage and back of the hands with very good results. Patients should expect moderate erythema with a “grazed” appearance for 24 to 48 hours and a sensitivity of the skin also lasting 24 to 48 hours. Redness of the face can last up to 10 days. After-care consists of using bland moisturisers and cleansers with no active products for 7 to 10 days. After that, active products can be safely introduced again to maintain results.

To achieve optimum results several sessions are recommended.
